RT-PCR COVID-19 TESTS
A PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test is a molecular test that detects genetic particles of SARS-CoV-2 virus in the nasopharyngeal swab sample. PCR is the most reliable and accurate test for detecting active infection. The PCR technology amplifies small amounts of virus RNA to DNA which is replicated until SARS-CoV-2 is detectable. The result is usually available within 12-24 hours of the sample reaching the molecular lab.

Rapid Antigen Tests For Covid-19
Rapid antigen tests are based on the detection of specific proteins (antigens) expressed on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 virus. The result can be obtained within 1 hour. The antigen test is less sensitive than PCR testing therefore likelihood of false negative results is higher. It is recommended that patients with symptoms who have a negative rapid antigen test have a PCR test for confirmation. Rapid antigen test is currently only approved by MoH Kenya in particular settings.
